Artist's statement

These paintings begin with a spontaneous reaching for something fundamental within, something simple but also ‘containing multitudes’. As I work in the lush medium of gouache on paper, I am in conversation with the shape the image is taking, the interrelationship of its marks, lines, forms and colours – some accidental, some more deliberate. Often things build to a point of tension, when I feel that something cohesive or relevant is unachievable. Then sometimes, as I persevere, a further layer of colour or another configuration can pull the whole to a satisfactory state, perhaps a place of stillness.

Significant aesthetic influences are Tantric imagery and the modernist abstract tradition, for example Dan Flavin, whose work may also be seen to embody a form of divinity.
